Rear wiper blades come back to the counter more often than front ones, almost always because the connector was wrong rather than the length. When is the whole arm needed?

What is checked on the spindle?

That the splines are sharp, that the seal at the base is not weeping, and that the nut torque is correct — typically 12 to 18 Nm. Not necessarily — they age at different rates because the front does far more work. But since both are on the same time-based cycle, it is worth checking the rear whenever the front pair is sold. Is a universal rear blade ever acceptable?

Only where the arm uses a standard hook, which is a minority of vehicles. A universal blade forced onto a proprietary clip sits at the wrong angle to the glass and leaves most of the screen unwiped. How do you size a rear blade when the old one is gone?

Measure the arc the wiper has cleaned on the glass. The clean band is the exact path the old blade took, and its length along the arc is the blade length to within a few millimetres. If the glass has been cleaned and no band shows, measure from the centre of the spindle to the furthest point the arm reaches, then subtract the distance from the spindle to where the blade starts on the arm — that remainder is the blade. Rear blades run from about 250 to 400 mm, with 300, 305 and 350 mm covering most vehicles here.
