A clutch rarely fails without warning. It slips, it drags, it judders or the pedal feels wrong, and each of those points at a different part of the system. Knowing which symptom means which part lets the counter sell the right kit instead of guessing, and lets the customer decide before they are stranded.

With the handbrake hard on, put the vehicle in third or fourth gear and let the clutch out slowly against the brake. A healthy clutch stalls the engine within a second or two. What does a dragging clutch mean?

The disc is not fully releasing, so gears crunch going into first or reverse from rest. The cause is usually hydraulic — air in the line, a failing master or slave cylinder — or a warped disc, or a worn spigot bearing. Oil on the facing from a leaking rear main seal or gearbox input seal, a distorted pressure plate, a warped disc, or loose engine mounts. What does a high or low biting point tell you?

A biting point that has crept high — near the top of the pedal travel — usually means the disc is worn thin, because the pressure plate fingers have moved to compensate.
