Most customers arrive knowing only the vehicle. Because a clutch disc has to match on four measurements, working from the model name alone is the most common reason a clutch comes back. The reliable route is the OE number stamped on the old disc or cover, backed by the chassis number and a caliper.

On the steel carrier plate between the hub and the facing, visible through the window between two springs, or on the hub boss. Toyota clutch numbers run like 31250-XXXXX, Nissan 30100-XXXXX, Mitsubishi MD-XXXXXX, Hyundai and Kia 41100-XXXXX. Wipe the plate with diesel and look at a low angle under light.

What do you do when nothing is readable?

Measure. Facing outside diameter, spline count, spline bore and thickness identify the disc without any number at all. Photograph the disc flat with a tape measure beside it and record the four figures on the order — that combination is far more reliable than a supersession chain from a worn stamp.

The kit — disc, cover and release bearing — in almost every case. All three have done the same distance, the gearbox has to come out for any one of them, and a new disc against an old worn cover slips within months. Selling a disc alone to save the customer money usually costs them the whole job twice.

What must be confirmed for a diesel or turbo version?

That the torque rating matches. The same body shell often comes in petrol and diesel with completely different clutches — the diesel usually one size larger in diameter and higher in clamp load. Ask for the engine code, not the model name, because the two versions share a chassis prefix.

How do you handle a dual-mass flywheel vehicle?

Check before quoting. A dual-mass flywheel has its own springs and typically lasts 150,000 to 200,000 km, and its disc has a rigid hub with no springs of its own. Fitting a sprung disc to a dual-mass flywheel, or reusing a worn dual-mass, produces a rattle at idle that the customer will blame on the new clutch.
