Three things end the life of a shaft. It gets bent, usually by an impact or by jacking under it. Its splines wear until the slip joint is loose enough to clunk. Or the slip joint seizes with rust so it can no longer change length. Each has a different symptom and only one of them can be repaired in a general workshop.

How do I check whether a shaft is bent?

Support it at both ends so it can turn freely, set a dial gauge against the tube near the middle, and rotate it. Runout beyond about 0.5 mm on a propeller shaft tube is enough to cause vibration. Without a gauge, a straight edge laid along the tube while turning will show an obvious bend, though not a small one.

The slip joint clunks on take-up. Is that repairable?

Sometimes. If the splines are only dry, cleaning and regreasing them cures it. If they are visibly worn with rounded edges, the slip yoke or the shaft is replaced, because the clunk is the shaft rotating a few degrees before the worn splines take up. Reconditioned shafts with new splined sections are usually available.

When is a reconditioned shaft the right answer?

When the tube is straight and only the joints, the splines or the centre bearing are worn, which covers most high-mileage trucks. A reputable rebuilder replaces those parts and re-balances the finished shaft on a machine, which is the step that matters. Insist that it is balanced after rebuilding, not before.
