A drive shaft carries torque from the differential to one wheel and must cope with the suspension moving and, at the front, the wheel steering. A propeller shaft carries torque the length of the vehicle from gearbox to rear axle. Long shafts are usually split in two with an intermediate or centre bearing holding the join.

What does the intermediate bearing actually do?

It supports the shaft at its midpoint so that the unsupported length is halved. A long slender shaft turning at 3,000 rpm will whip if it is unsupported, exactly as a skipping rope does, and the vibration grows with speed until something breaks. The rubber mount around the bearing also isolates that vibration from the body.

Why does a propeller shaft have a sliding section?

Because the distance between the gearbox and the axle changes as the rear suspension moves. The splined slip joint lets the shaft get longer and shorter by several centimetres. If that slip joint seizes with rust, the shaft cannot change length, and it then pushes and pulls on the gearbox output bearing until something gives.

Can a propeller shaft be shortened or lengthened?

Only by a specialist shop that can cut, re-weld and re-balance it, and it is done when a vehicle is converted or re-bodied. It is not a roadside modification. A shaft that has been shortened without rebalancing will vibrate at road speed, and an out-of-balance shaft destroys the centre bearing and the gearbox rear seal in short order.
