A hub or axle seal has a different job from an engine seal. It is not keeping oil away from the road — it is keeping oil away from the brake. The diagram shows why this seal is a brake part, not just an oil part. A hub or axle seal is not keeping oil off the road — it sits between the differential oil and the brake drum, and its job is to keep oil away from the brake. Can oily brake linings be cleaned instead of replaced?

No. Brake friction material is porous by design, and oil soaks into it rather than sitting on the surface. Cleaning removes what you can see and leaves what matters, and the lining glazes again as soon as it gets hot. How quickly does a hub seal leak reach the linings?

What has to be replaced once oil reaches the brakes?

Is there any warning before oil reaches the brake?

Usually a dark damp patch on the inside of the backing plate or on the inner face of the wheel, and sometimes a faint smell of hot oil after a run. The vehicle may also pull very slightly under braking before it becomes obvious. Say plainly what the half job leaves behind, then let them decide with the facts. Oil that has soaked into a brake lining does not come back out, so a seal fitted on its own leaves one wheel on that axle braking at a fraction of the other. The vehicle will pull sideways under hard braking, which is at its worst in the wet and exactly when it matters. The honest quotation is the seal, both shoe or pad sets on that axle, and the drum or disc cleaned or replaced depending on how far the oil went. Price the two options side by side and write both on the job card. If they still want the seal alone, note on the card that the contaminated linings were reported and declined, and tell them the vehicle should not be loaded until the brakes are done.
