A universal joint kit is specified by two measurements and one arrangement. The cap diameter is the outside diameter of the needle roller cups, and the width is measured across the outside faces of two opposite caps when the joint is assembled. The arrangement is whether the snap rings sit inside the yoke or outside it.

Light commercials commonly use caps of 25 to 30 mm with an overall width in the 64 to 82 mm range, while medium trucks move to 30 to 40 mm caps and widths of 90 to 120 mm. Both numbers are needed: two joints with the same cap diameter and different widths will not interchange, and the cap is the easier one to measure wrongly because of wear.

Why does snap ring position matter?

Because it decides where the joint locates in the yoke. An inside-clip joint is held by rings that sit in grooves machined on the inner face of the yoke; an outside-clip joint uses grooves on the outer face. The cross and caps can measure identically and still be the wrong kit, and forcing the wrong type leaves the joint unsupported on one side.

The kit came with a grease nipple but the old one had none. Is that a problem?

Not a problem, but it changes the maintenance. A sealed-for-life joint is fitted and forgotten; a greasable joint must actually be greased on schedule or it will last less time than the sealed one it replaced. Check that the nipple clears the shaft and the yoke through a full rotation before finally tightening.
