A universal joint lets a propeller shaft transmit drive while the angle between the gearbox and the axle keeps changing as the suspension moves. It does this with a four-armed cross running in four needle roller cups. Because a single joint speeds up and slows down slightly through each revolution when it is working at an angle, two joints are used so the second cancels the variation the first creates.

What does a worn universal joint feel like from the driver's seat?

A clunk when taking up drive from rest or when changing between drive and overrun, and a vibration through the floor that grows with road speed. The clunk comes first, usually by many thousands of kilometres. Once the vibration starts, the joint is close to the point where it can seize.

What happens if a universal joint seizes while driving?

The propeller shaft can no longer follow the suspension movement, so it either bends, tears out of the gearbox flange, or drops at one end and digs into the road. On a loaded truck this is a serious event, which is why a clunking joint is repaired rather than monitored.

Should both joints be replaced at the same time?

On a shaft that has to come out anyway, yes. Both joints have turned the same number of revolutions under the same loads, so the second is rarely far behind the first. The labour of removing and refitting a propeller shaft is most of the job, and the balance of the shaft is disturbed each time it is dismantled.
