Unlike a ball bearing, a taper bearing does not arrive with its clearance built in — you set it during fitting by how far the nut pulls the two halves together. Too loose and the hub knocks and the rollers skid; too tight and the rollers are squeezed against the cup until the grease film collapses and the bearing blues within minutes of running.

What is the usual method for setting a wheel hub taper pair?

Torque the nut to a high figure, commonly 100 to 200 Nm, while turning the hub so the rollers seat fully in the cups. The high torque seats the bearing; the low torque sets the running clearance.

How much end float should a wheel hub have?

Typically 0.02 to 0.10 mm measured with a dial gauge against the hub face while pulling and pushing the hub in and out. It is a small enough figure that it cannot be judged by hand. Differential pinion bearings are the opposite case and are set to a preload measured as rolling torque, not as float.

Yes, on an open hub. Work the grease through the cage from the wide end until it emerges at the narrow end, so the space between every roller is filled rather than just coated. Then smear a film into the cup before assembly. A taper bearing that is only wiped with grease on the outside runs dry for the first few seconds of every start, which is when most of the wear happens.
