A sensor is matched by three things beyond the vehicle: the original equipment part number, the shape and pin count of the connector, and the length of the cable. Two sensors that measure identically can still be wrong for a vehicle if the plug or the cable run differs.

Why does the cable length matter on a wheel speed sensor?

The cable is routed along a fixed path with clips, and it has to reach the connector without being stretched when the suspension is at full droop. A cable that is too short pulls out or breaks internally over bumps; one that is too long hangs down and is cut by the tyre. Left and right are often different lengths.

The new sensor has a different connector. Can I cut and splice?

It is a poor idea on a sensor circuit. These signals are very small, and a soldered or crimped joint in the harness introduces resistance and lets water in, which produces exactly the intermittent fault that is hardest to find later. Order the sensor with the correct connector rather than modifying the loom.

Is an aftermarket sensor as good as the original?

It depends on the sensor. For a simple wheel speed sensor a good aftermarket part is usually fine. For sensors the computer calibrates itself against, such as an air flow meter, a part that reads even slightly differently can make the engine run rich or lean. Match the original number where the computer depends on the reading.
