A sensor measures one thing and reports it to the vehicle computer, which then adjusts fuelling, ignition or braking. Because the computer names the circuit it is unhappy about, a fault code very often names a sensor when the real problem is the wiring to it or the condition it is measuring.

Does a fault code naming a sensor mean the sensor is faulty?

No. It means the computer saw a reading from that circuit that it considers impossible or out of range. That can be a failed sensor, a broken or corroded wire, a poor earth, a connector full of water, or a genuine mechanical condition the sensor is correctly reporting. Read the live data before buying a part.

What does an ABS sensor actually measure?

It measures how fast one wheel is turning, by reading a toothed ring or a magnetic ring that turns with the hub. The ABS computer compares the four wheels: if one is slowing much faster than the others under braking it is about to lock, so pressure to that brake is released momentarily.

Why does an ABS light often come on with dirt rather than a fault?

The sensor sits very close to the toothed ring, often within a millimetre, and metal dust from the brakes collects on the magnetic tip. That build-up weakens the signal until the computer decides the reading is unreliable. Cleaning the sensor tip and the ring resolves a good proportion of ABS lights at no cost.
