How to Measure a Panel Air Filter

Measure a panel air filter across the outside of the rubber sealing lip, not across the paper. You need three figures in millimetres: length, width and height. Take all three with a steel rule or a vernier caliper, with the filter lying flat on a clean surface.

Why measure across the lip and not the paper?

Because the lip is what seals against the housing, so the lip is what has to fit. The paper media inside is always smaller than the outside of the filter. A measurement taken across the paper will be several millimetres short and will lead to a filter that rattles in the box and lets air past.

What if the filter is not a plain rectangle?

Many panel filters have a notch, a stepped corner or a moulded tab so they can only go into the housing one way round. Measure the overall length and width across the widest points, then note the shape feature separately. Two filters with identical measurements but a different notch are not interchangeable.

How much tolerance is acceptable on each measurement?

Length and width should be within about one to two millimetres, because the lip needs to be slightly compressed but not folded. Height is more forgiving and a few millimetres either way is usually fine, since the lid presses the filter down. When a filter has to be forced into the box, it is the wrong filter.
