Air filters come in three shapes. A panel filter is a flat rectangle that drops into a box. A round filter is a ring that sits in a circular housing, common on older engines and on machinery. A conical filter is an open cone clamped directly onto the intake pipe, usually on modified vehicles.

The drawing above shows the two shapes you will meet most often and where each one is measured. A panel filter is described by length, width and height. A round filter is described by outer diameter, inner diameter and height. The red band on the panel filter is the rubber sealing lip, which matters as much as any of the three measurements.

Why do most modern engines use a panel filter?

A flat box fits more easily into the tight space at the front of a modern engine bay than a round housing does, and it gives a straight path for the air into the intake. A panel filter is also quicker to change, because the box usually opens with clips rather than a central bolt.

Is a conical open filter better than the standard box?

It flows more air, but it also draws hot air from the engine bay instead of cool air from outside, and it is exposed to water and road dirt. On a standard road vehicle the original box with a good filter is usually the better choice. In dusty conditions an open filter loads up very quickly.

Can I fit a round filter where a panel filter belongs?

No. The housing is built for one shape only, and the sealing surface for a panel filter is a flat rectangular ledge, not a circular seat. Air that goes round the filter instead of through it carries dust straight into the engine, so any filter that does not seal to its housing is worse than useless.
