Take the filter out and hold it up to daylight from the dirty side. A serviceable filter lets light through the pleats clearly. One that is heavily loaded shows little or no light and the pleats look grey and packed. Also check the pleats for oil, dampness or insect and leaf debris — any of these blocks flow as effectively as dust does, and a wet filter never recovers.

Yes, and it is one of the few checks an owner can do without tools on most vehicles. The airbox usually opens with clips or a few screws, the filter lifts straight out, and it goes back one way only. Checking it after a dusty trip costs nothing and tells you more than any interval table can.
