A blocked air filter shows itself as gradually worse fuel consumption, weaker acceleration and a slightly rougher idle. None of these arrive suddenly, which is why the reliable check is to look at the filter rather than wait for a symptom you can feel.

What are the signs?

Watch for these, in the order they usually appear.
ပေါ်ပေါက်လေ့ရှိသည့် အစဉ်လိုက် လက္ခဏာများ ဖြစ်ပါသည်။
- Fuel consumption creeping up over months with no other change.
- Acceleration feeling flatter, particularly when the engine is worked hard.
- A slightly uneven idle.
- Black smoke from the exhaust on acceleration, most visible on a diesel.
- An engine check light on vehicles with an airflow sensor, which can be fouled by a collapsing filter.
- Visible dust or debris inside the airbox when you open it.

Why does a blocked filter use more fuel?

Because the engine has to pull harder against the restriction to draw in the air it needs, and that effort is energy that comes from fuel rather than going into moving the vehicle. On engines with an airflow sensor, the fuelling is also adjusted to the reduced airflow, which can make the mixture richer than it should be. The loss is small per journey and significant over a year.

Could these signs be something else?

Yes, easily — worn spark plugs, a dirty fuel filter, low tyre pressures and a failing oxygen sensor all produce similar symptoms. That is exactly why the air filter is worth checking first: it takes two minutes, needs no tools on most vehicles, and it is the cheapest of those parts to replace. Rule it out before paying to diagnose the others.
