Inspect a V-belt with the engine off and cool. Turn the crankshaft by hand so the whole belt passes a point you can see, and check three things in turn: the side faces, the top surface and the bottom. The single most important check is whether the belt still stands proud of the pulley groove.

How do I tell whether the belt is sitting too low?

Look at the belt where it enters the pulley. A serviceable belt stands slightly above the outer edge of the groove, or is level with it. A belt whose top face has sunk below the edge of the groove has worn narrow and is running on its bottom instead of its sides. Replace it, because tightening will not restore the grip.

What do cracks on the underside mean?

Cracks running across the bottom of the belt mean the rubber has hardened with age and heat and can no longer flex around the pulleys. A few fine cracks mean the belt is near the end of its life. Deep cracks, or cracks with pieces of rubber missing between them, mean the belt should be replaced now rather than at the next service.

The sides look shiny. Is that a problem?

Yes. A glazed, polished side face means the belt has been slipping, and glazing reduces grip further so the slipping gets worse. Find why it slipped, which is usually low tension, a worn belt, a worn pulley groove or oil contamination. A glazed belt does not recover and should be replaced once the cause has been fixed.
