Measuring an old V-belt takes two readings. Measure the top width with a vernier caliper to identify the profile, then measure the inside length with a flexible tape held in a smooth loop. A width of 13 millimetres is an A profile, 17 millimetres is B and 22 millimetres is C.

Where exactly do I measure the width?

Across the top face, which is the widest part of the belt and the surface that faces outwards when the belt is fitted. Do not measure across the middle of the belt, because the sides taper inwards and any reading taken lower down will be too small. If the top edges are worn round, measure the pulley groove width instead.

How do I measure the length without a belt measuring tool?

Lay the belt on a clean flat surface, form it into a smooth oval without pulling it, and run a flexible tape along the inside surface all the way round. Alternatively wrap a piece of string around the inside of the belt, mark where it meets, then lay the string out straight and measure it with a steel rule.

The old belt is broken. Can I still measure it?

Yes. Lay the broken belt out straight on the floor and measure from one cut end to the other along the inside surface, which gives the inside length directly. Take care not to stretch it while measuring. If the belt is missing a piece, measure the distance around the pulleys instead and add the wrap allowance from the catalogue.
