Timing belt width is the measurement across the teeth, and it is the last number in the size code. Common automotive widths are 17, 19, 22, 25, 27 and 30 millimetres. Width sets how much torque the belt can carry, so a narrower belt than specified will shear its teeth even though it fits on the gears.

How do I measure the width accurately?

Use a vernier caliper across the toothed face, not across the back, and take the reading at three places around the belt. Take the largest of the three, because the belt edges wear and a worn section reads narrow. Round the result to the nearest standard width rather than ordering the exact figure you measured.

What happens if I fit a belt that is too wide?

The belt fouls the gear flanges and the cover. The edge is then trimmed away by whatever it rubs against, which shreds the tension cords at the edge of the belt and leads to failure. On some engines a wider belt will not go into the cover at all, which at least makes the mistake obvious before the engine is started.

Do all belts for one engine family share a width?

Not reliably. Manufacturers often widen the belt on a higher-output version of the same engine, or on a version fitted with a belt-driven water pump. The safest method is to match the belt to the engine code rather than to the vehicle model and year, because the same model can be sold with more than one engine.
