Many modern alternators are fitted with an overrunning pulley, also called a one-way clutch pulley or a decoupler. It drives the alternator in one direction but freewheels in the other, which absorbs the speed changes of the crankshaft and stops the belt from being jerked at every firing pulse.

An overrunning pulley (OAP or OAD) has a one-way clutch between the pulley and the rotor: it drives in one direction and freewheels in the other, letting the rotor coast. It exists because the alternator rotor is heavy and spins at two to three times engine speed — on every firing pulse and every gearchange it tries to keep going while the belt slows down. Letting it freewheel removes that fight, which means a quieter belt, less flutter and a longer life for the tensioner. A failed one shows as belt squeal or chirp on start-up and gearchange, a rattle from the alternator, or a pulley that now turns both ways. With the belt removed, turn the alternator pulley by hand. A plain solid pulley turns the alternator both ways with equal resistance. What happens when an overrunning pulley fails?

A worn clutch either locks solid or slips. When it locks, the damping is lost and the belt and tensioner start to vibrate visibly at idle, often with a rattle from the front of the engine. When it slips, the alternator no longer keeps up and the battery warning light appears at low engine speeds. Can I fit a plain solid pulley instead?

It is not advisable. Engines designed around an overrunning pulley rely on it to absorb crankshaft pulses, and fitting a solid pulley transfers those pulses straight into the belt and tensioner. The usual result is belt noise at idle, rapid tensioner wear and a shortened belt life.
