An automatic tensioner is a spring-loaded arm carrying a smooth pulley that presses against the V-ribbed belt and keeps it tight as the belt lengthens with age and heat. When the spring weakens or the internal damper wears out, the arm can no longer control the belt and the belt begins to slip and squeal.

How do I test a tensioner without removing it?

Start the engine and watch the tensioner arm. A healthy tensioner sits almost still, moving only a millimetre or two. An arm that visibly bounces or oscillates as the engine idles has lost its damping and should be replaced. With the engine off, lever the arm through its full travel and let it return: it should move smoothly against firm spring resistance and return without snapping back.

What are the wear marks on a tensioner?

Look for rust dust around the pivot, which means the internal bushing has worn. Check whether the arm has side play when you push it sideways by hand, because a worn pivot lets the pulley tilt and puts the belt out of line. Spin the tensioner pulley itself and listen: a dry or notchy bearing means the pulley needs replacing even if the spring is still strong.

Many tensioners carry two cast marks, a pointer on the moving arm and a window or notch on the fixed body. With a correctly sized belt fitted and the engine off, the pointer should sit between the marks. A pointer that has travelled past the end of its range means either the belt has stretched beyond its limit or a belt that is too long has been fitted.
