An idler pulley does not drive anything. It guides the V-ribbed belt around obstructions and increases how much of each driven pulley the belt wraps around. Most idlers are smooth because the flat backside of the belt runs on them, and their only moving part is a sealed ball bearing that wears out with age.

How do I check an idler pulley?

Remove the belt and spin the pulley by hand. It should turn freely, quietly and coast for a moment before stopping. Roughness, a grinding feel, or a squeak means the bearing has failed. Then grip the pulley and rock it: any side to side movement at all means the bearing has play and the pulley must be replaced, because that play tilts the belt.

Why does a failing idler damage the belt?

A bearing with play lets the pulley tilt under belt load, so the belt is pulled to one side every revolution. The belt edge frays, the backside becomes glazed, and the belt runs hot. A seizing bearing is worse: the pulley stops turning and the belt is dragged across a stationary surface, which melts a flat patch into the backside and can part the belt within minutes.

Are all idler pulleys smooth, or do some have grooves?

Both types exist. A smooth idler runs against the flat backside of the belt. A grooved idler runs against the ribbed side and has the same 40 degree grooves as a driven pulley. When ordering a replacement, match the type as well as the diameter and the bolt size, because fitting a smooth idler where a grooved one belongs leaves the ribs unsupported.
