A brake pad shim is a thin damping layer fitted behind the brake pad. The diagram places the shim where it actually sits: a thin layer — usually steel with a rubber or adhesive facing — between the back of the pad and the caliper piston. Brake squeal is the pad vibrating against the disc at a frequency you can hear, and damping that vibration is the shim only job. It is not a spacer and it does not affect stopping power, so a missing shim makes noise rather than a longer stopping distance. Old shims should never be reused on new pads: the damping layer is already fatigued and heat-hardened, and it no longer matches the backing plate of the new pad. If the new pads come with shims already fitted, use those, because they are matched to that pad.

Can I reuse the shims from my old pads?

We do not recommend it. A shim's damping layer hardens with heat over the life of the pad, so an old shim has already lost most of its effect. What are the different types of shim?

Three in common use. A single steel shim spot-welded to the backing plate. A rubber-coated steel shim, which damps vibration better. And a multi-layer shim with a viscoelastic core between two steel sheets, which is the most effective and is fitted to pads sold for quiet operation. What goes on the back of the pad, and what must never?

A thin smear of high-temperature brake grease or copper-free ceramic paste on the contact points between the shim and the caliper piston or fingers, and on the slide pins. What if the shim is fitted the wrong way round?

The pad will still go in and the brakes will still work, but the noise the shim exists to stop comes back, and the friction face of the shim can contact the caliper piston where it was meant to sit against the backing plate.
