What do the GSR RN codes mean?

RN marks the rod family and the two digits after it are the vehicle make. In our listings RN22016, RN22017 and RN22018 are all Nissan, while RN32003 and RN32022 are Mini and BMW — and the OE numbers confirm it, because the Mini rods carry BMW numbering in the 33 32 6 group. A trailing L or R marks the side.

It appears to, consistently enough to be useful. Across our suspension listings the same two-digit make codes recur — 11 Hyundai, 22 Nissan, 25 Mazda, 28 Acura and Honda, 31 Mercedes-Benz, 32 BMW and Mini, 42 Citroen, 43 Renault. You will see them on MC coil spring mountings, BM shock mount bearings and YF body bushes as well as RN rods. Treat it as a shortcut to verify, not as gospel.

What does the OE prefix tell me?

The axle and often the position. Nissan uses the 551 group for rear suspension rods — 55110-60U01, 55120-10Y00, 55130-70T00 and 55131-70T00 in our listings, with 55130 and 55131 being the right and left of a pair. BMW and Mini use 33 32 for rear links. Jaguar uses its own C2C, C2P and C2S prefixes with no positional meaning, so those need the parts book.

Two rods look identical but have different numbers. Why?

Usually length or bush bore, and a few millimetres of either changes the geometry. Measure centre to centre between the two eyes, then measure each bore. Two rods that differ by 5 mm in length will both bolt in and one of them will set the axle in the wrong place, which shows up as tyre wear weeks later rather than as an obvious misfit.

Should rods be replaced in pairs?

Across an axle, yes, for the same reason as bushings — the two sides have done the same mileage under the same load. A new rod on one side and a tired one on the other gives an axle that is stiffer on one side, and the car pulls under braking. Where a rod is a single centre item such as a panhard rod, there is only one to replace.

Can just the bush be replaced instead of the whole rod?

Sometimes, and it is worth asking. If the rod body is straight and uncorroded and the bush is a separate pressed item, a bush is a fraction of the cost. If the bush is bonded into a swaged eye, or the rod is rusted at the tube, buy the rod. Take the old one to the counter and staff can tell you in seconds which of the two you have.

What should I bring to the showroom?

The chassis number, which rod position is faulty if you know it, the old rod or its measured centre-to-centre length and bore sizes, and the GSR or OE number if either is readable. With the OE number alone staff can go straight to the listing; without it, the measurements do the job.
