The bearing is the thrust bearing that sits with it so the whole strut can rotate when you steer, because on a MacPherson strut the spring and damper turn with the wheel. What does the spring seat do?

It gives the end of the coil spring a flat, correctly angled face to press against, and it isolates steel from steel. Most are rubber or a rubber-faced steel pressing. When one perishes the spring end sits directly on metal, which is noisy, and the spring can rotate and eventually wear a groove or snap at the last coil.

What does a failed mount sound and feel like?

A knock or a creak from the top of the strut when you turn the wheel at low speed, most obvious when parking. On a failed bearing the steering also feels notchy and may not self-centre after a turn. Bounce the front and listen at the top of the strut tower rather than at the wheel — the noise comes from inside the wing.

Can a bad mount cause uneven tyre wear?

Yes. The mount is the upper locating point of the strut, so a collapsed or torn one lets the top of the strut move and camber changes with it. The alignment then reads correctly on the ramp and wrong on the road, exactly like a worn arm bushing. Check the mounts before paying for a second alignment.

Should the mount be replaced whenever the strut is?

On any vehicle with real mileage, yes. The strut has to come out to reach the mount, so the labour is already paid for, and a tired mount will make a new strut sound and feel no better than the old one. Fitting a new strut under an old mount is the most common reason a customer returns saying the noise is still there.

Absolutely, and this is the one safety point in this article that is not negotiable. A compressed coil spring on a strut stores enough energy to kill. Use a proper compressor in good condition, never improvised clamps, keep body parts out of the line of the spring, and release the tension in stages. If the workshop cannot show you a serviceable compressor, take the job elsewhere.
