Glow plugs fail quietly and the driver adapts — cranking a little longer, accepting a puff of white smoke. By the time a customer complains, two or three of the four are usually dead. Testing them takes five minutes with a multimeter and does not need the plugs removed.

What else causes hard cold starting on a diesel?
