A battery terminal is sized by the post it clamps and the cable it accepts. On a JIS battery the positive post is slightly larger in diameter than the negative, so the two terminals are not interchangeable. Ring lugs are sized by the bolt hole, commonly 6, 8 or 10 millimetres.

Why is the positive post bigger?

It is deliberate, so that a positive terminal cannot be fitted to a negative post and reverse the polarity of the whole vehicle. Reversed polarity destroys the alternator diodes and the engine control unit within seconds. If a terminal fits loosely on one post and will not go on the other, that is the reason.

Does a thicker battery cable help?

Only up to the size the vehicle was designed for. A cable thinner than specified drops voltage under the starter load, so the starter turns slowly even with a good battery. A cable much thicker than specified adds cost and weight without benefit. Match the original cross-section, and replace any cable with green corrosion inside the insulation.

Can I just clean the old terminal instead of replacing it?

If the clamp still tightens properly and the metal is sound, cleaning is enough. Replace it when the clamp has been over-tightened and spread so it no longer grips, when the casting is cracked, or when corrosion has eaten into the metal itself rather than sitting on the surface. A terminal is cheap; a stranded vehicle is not.
