The battery terminal is the clamp that joins the cable to the battery post, and the cable carries the starter current from the battery to the starter motor and the earth strap carries it back through the body. All of the current the starter needs passes through these few connections.

Why does a loose terminal look exactly like a flat battery?

Because the starter needs hundreds of amps and a poor connection cannot pass them. The lights work, the dashboard lights up and the radio plays, because those need very little current. Then the key is turned and there is a click or nothing at all. Always grip and twist both terminals before testing anything else.

What is the white or green powder on a terminal?

It is sulphate corrosion, formed where acid vapour and moisture meet the metal. It is an insulator, so it steadily increases the resistance of the joint. Disconnect the terminals, clean the post and the clamp back to bright metal with a terminal brush, refit and then coat the outside with petroleum jelly or terminal grease.

Why is the earth strap as important as the positive cable?

Because the current has to return. The starter draws its current through the positive cable and sends it back through the engine block, the earth strap and the body to the negative terminal. A corroded earth strap limits the return path just as effectively as a broken positive cable, and it is checked far less often.
