A halogen bulb is a filament in a quartz envelope and is what most vehicles leave the factory with. LED and HID produce light differently and are much brighter, but a headlamp reflector is designed around the exact position and size of a halogen filament, so a straight swap rarely gives a usable beam.

Why does an LED bulb in a halogen reflector dazzle other drivers?

The reflector is shaped to gather light from a filament of a particular size in a particular place and throw it into a controlled beam with a sharp cut-off. An LED emits from a different shape and position, so much of its light misses the reflector pattern and scatters upward into oncoming traffic.

Why must I not touch a halogen bulb with bare fingers?

The oil left by skin stays on the quartz and does not evaporate. When the bulb runs, that patch heats differently from the glass around it, which creates a stress point and the envelope cracks or the bulb fails early. Hold a new bulb by its base or through a clean cloth, and wipe the glass with alcohol if it is touched.

Should headlamp bulbs be changed in pairs?

Yes. Both bulbs have run the same hours, so when one fails the other is close behind. More importantly a new bulb next to an old one gives noticeably uneven light output left and right, which is distracting at night and makes the dimmer side look like a fault. Change both and keep the old working one as a spare.
