A suspension bushing is described by three figures in millimetres: the inner bore diameter, the outer diameter and the length, usually written in that order as something like 12 by 40 by 45. The inner bore takes the bolt or the sleeve, the outer diameter presses into the arm, and the length must match the eye it sits in.

Which of the three is the most critical?

The outer diameter, because it is an interference fit. A bushing even half a millimetre undersize will spin in the arm instead of flexing, and one oversize cannot be pressed in without distorting it. The inner bore and the length have a little more tolerance, but all three should be confirmed against the old part.

How do I measure a bushing that is still pressed in?

Measure the inner bore with the jaws of a vernier caliper and measure the arm eye across its inside for the outer diameter, since the bushing fills it exactly. Measure the length across the exposed faces. If the old bushing has perished and collapsed, measure the arm eye alone and order by the arm instead.

Is polyurethane a straight replacement for rubber?

Only if it is made in the exact same three dimensions for that arm. Polyurethane is harder, so it holds the suspension geometry more precisely but transmits more road noise and vibration into the body. It also usually needs grease on assembly, where a rubber bushing does not. Match the size first, then decide on the material.
