A tie rod end has two threads that both have to match. The stud thread at the bottom fits the steering knuckle, and the housing thread at the side screws onto the tie rod. The housing thread is a left-hand thread on one side of the vehicle and a right-hand thread on the other, and the two are not interchangeable.

The right of the drawing above shows a tie rod end. The horizontal threaded shank with the hatching is the housing thread that screws into the tie rod, and the block against the housing is the lock nut that holds the adjustment. Below the housing is the same tapered stud arrangement used on a ball joint.

Why does one side use a left-hand thread?

So that turning the tie rod moves the toe setting the same way on both sides. With opposite hands, rotating the rod lengthens one side and shortens the other in a consistent direction, which is what makes wheel alignment adjustable without removing anything. It also means a right-hand end simply will not start in a left-hand rod.

How do I tell a left-hand thread from a right-hand one?

Look along the shank at the angle of the thread grooves. On a right-hand thread the grooves rise to the right, and on a left-hand thread they rise to the left. Many left-hand parts are also marked with an L in the part number or a groove cut around the housing. Turning it anticlockwise to tighten confirms it.

What happens if I fit a tie rod end and do not reset the alignment?

The toe angle changes as soon as the old end is unscrewed, because the new end will not thread on to exactly the same depth. Even a small toe error scrubs the tyre sideways as the vehicle rolls and can ruin a tyre in a few thousand kilometres. A wheel alignment is part of the job, not an optional extra.
