A stabilizer link is ordered by its centre-to-centre length and by the thread size at each end. The length is measured from the centre of one ball stud to the centre of the other with the link laid straight. Links that look identical often differ by only ten or fifteen millimetres.

The lower part of the drawing above shows where the length is measured. Take it from the centre of one ball to the centre of the other, not from the outside faces and not along the body of the link. On a link with an angled body the figure is still the straight line between the two ball centres.

What happens if the link is too short or too long?

A link that is the wrong length twists the anti-roll bar while the vehicle is standing still, so the bar is already loaded before the vehicle even moves. That pre-load makes the suspension feel harsh on one side, wears the link and its bushes quickly, and in some cases lifts a wheel slightly on rough ground.

Are both ends always the same thread?

Not always. Many links use the same thread at both ends, commonly M10 by 1.25, but some use a larger thread at the lower end where it bolts to the strut and a smaller one at the bar. Check both ends before ordering, and note which end is which if the link is not symmetrical.

Why are stabilizer links replaced in pairs?

The anti-roll bar works by comparing what the two sides of the axle are doing. A new tight link on one side and a worn loose one on the other gives the bar a different response left and right, so the vehicle leans unevenly in corners and the new link takes more load. Fit both sides together.
