A fuel filter is either in-line, meaning a small canister with a hose connection at each end, or spin-on, meaning it screws onto a housing like an oil filter. On an in-line filter the two measurements that matter are the hose barb diameter and the body length, and the arrow on the body must point towards the engine.

The upper part of the drawing above shows an in-line filter with the flow arrow in red. Fuel enters at one end, passes through the media and leaves at the other. Fitting the filter backwards forces fuel through the media in the wrong direction, which pushes the trapped dirt out of the filter and into the injectors.

What hose sizes are common on an in-line fuel filter?

Six, seven, eight, ten and twelve millimetres are the usual barb diameters, with eight millimetres by far the most common on petrol engines. The barb outer diameter must match the fuel hose inner diameter. A barb that is too small leaves a joint that can draw air in on the suction side, which causes hard starting and misfires.

What happens if I fit an in-line filter the wrong way round?

The engine may run normally at first, which is what makes the mistake easy to miss. Over time the dirt already held in the media is washed back out into the fuel line and carried to the injectors or the carburettor. Always check that the arrow points towards the engine before tightening the hose clips.

Which measurements matter on a spin-on diesel filter?

The same four as an oil filter: the centre thread size, the sealing gasket outer and inner diameter, the can diameter and the overall height. Diesel filters often also have a second smaller thread at the bottom for the water drain tap, and a sensor port on some housings. Check those fittings as well as the main thread.
