A fuel filter removes rust, sediment and water from the fuel before it reaches the injectors. On a diesel engine it matters far more than on a petrol engine, because diesel injection runs at very high pressure with extremely fine clearances, and the fuel itself lubricates the pump — so a particle that a petrol engine would tolerate can damage a diesel injection system.

Rust and scale from fuel tanks and storage drums, fine sediment picked up in transport and handling, and water. Water is the one most people underestimate: it enters through condensation in a part-full tank and through the fuel supply itself, and in a diesel system it causes corrosion and destroys the lubrication the pump depends on.

What is a water separator?

Many diesel fuel filters include a bowl or chamber at the base where water, being heavier than diesel, settles out and collects. Some have a drain tap or a warning sensor. That collected water must be drained periodically — a separator left undrained eventually fills and passes water straight through, which defeats the purpose of having one.

What happens if the fuel filter is neglected?

On petrol, a blocked filter starves the engine, which shows as hesitation, loss of power under load and difficult starting. On diesel the consequences are more expensive: a restricted filter makes the high-pressure pump work against suction, and water or particles reaching the injectors can damage components that cost many times the price of the filter. This is the part where deferring maintenance is least worth it.
