A fuel filter removes rust, sediment and water from the fuel before it reaches the injectors. What is a water separator?

Many diesel fuel filters include a bowl or chamber at the base where water, being heavier than diesel, settles out and collects. Some have a drain tap or a warning sensor. What happens if the fuel filter is neglected?

On petrol, a blocked filter starves the engine, which shows as hesitation, loss of power under load and difficult starting. On diesel the consequences are more expensive: a restricted filter makes the high-pressure pump work against suction, and water or particles reaching the injectors can damage components that cost many times the price of the filter. Why is a diesel so much harder on its fuel filter than a petrol engine?

Because the fuel is also the lubricant for the injection pump and the injectors. In a common rail system the pump runs at 1,500 to 2,000 bar and the injector nozzle holes are 0.1 to 0.15 mm across, with internal clearances of a few microns. Any particle that gets through scores those surfaces immediately. Why does water matter more than dirt in diesel?

Because water does three things at once. It does not lubricate, so it lets metal touch metal in the pump. It flashes to steam at the injector tip and erodes the nozzle. And it corrodes the precision surfaces while the vehicle stands overnight. Where does the water in diesel come from?

On a common rail engine, the high pressure pump and all the injectors, because debris from a failing pump circulates and damages everything downstream.
