A micron rating says how small a particle the filter will stop. One micron is one thousandth of a millimetre. A petrol filter is typically rated around ten microns, while a modern common rail diesel filter has to be far finer, often around two to five microns, because the injectors have much tighter clearances.

Why does a common rail diesel need such a fine filter?

The clearances inside a common rail injector are measured in a very small number of microns, and the fuel itself lubricates those moving parts. A particle larger than the clearance scores the surfaces and the injector begins to leak or stick. Injectors are among the most expensive parts on a diesel engine, so the filter is cheap protection.

Is a finer filter always the safer choice?

No. A filter that is finer than the engine was designed for restricts fuel flow and the pump has to work harder to pull through it, which can starve the engine at high load and shorten pump life. Fit the rating the engine maker specifies. Finer is not a free upgrade.

Why do some fuel filters look identical but cost very differently?

The difference is inside. A cheap filter may use fewer pleats of coarser paper, a weaker centre tube that collapses under suction, or no water separating layer at all. None of that is visible from outside the can. On a diesel engine in particular, the saving on a cheap filter is small next to the cost of an injection repair.
