A diesel fuel filter usually has a clear or metal bowl underneath with a drain tap at the bottom. Water is heavier than diesel, so it settles there. Opening that tap regularly and letting the water run out is one of the cheapest things you can do to protect a diesel injection system.

The lower part of the drawing above shows where water collects. The shaded area at the bottom of the bowl is water that has separated out of the fuel. The small tap underneath is the drain. On many vehicles there is also a warning lamp fed by a sensor in that bowl, which lights when the water level rises.

How often should the water be drained?

Check at every oil change as a minimum, and more often in the rainy season or if the vehicle is fuelled from drums or roadside sellers. Place a container underneath, open the tap until clean diesel runs, then close it. If water appears every time, the fuel source is the real problem.

What does water actually do to a diesel system?

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and the injectors as it passes through. Water does not, so where water reaches those parts they run dry for a moment and wear rapidly. Water also causes corrosion inside the pump and, in enough quantity, can stop the engine outright. The damage is expensive and entirely preventable.

Why will the engine not start after I change a diesel fuel filter?

Because air has entered the fuel line and a diesel injection system cannot pump air. The system has to be primed. Most vehicles have a hand primer pump on or near the filter housing: pump it until it goes firm, loosen the bleed screw until fuel free of bubbles appears, then close it and try to start. Some modern systems prime themselves on the ignition.

Should the new filter be filled with fuel before fitting?

On a spin-on diesel filter it shortens priming considerably, but fill it only with clean fuel poured through a fine strainer, and only on the dirty side if the housing design allows. Fuel poured carelessly into the clean side goes straight to the injectors unfiltered, which defeats the whole purpose of changing the filter.
