Follow the interval in your vehicle handbook, and treat it as a maximum rather than a target if you buy fuel from varied sources. Fuel filter life depends on how clean the fuel going in is, which varies far more between suppliers than between vehicles.

Should the water separator be drained separately?

Yes, and more often than the filter is changed. Draining takes a minute and costs nothing: open the tap at the base of the bowl, let the collected water out until clean fuel runs, and close it. Do it at every oil change at least, and more often in the wet season. A separator that is never drained fills and then passes water through as if it were not there.

Not necessarily on the same schedule — fuel filters usually run longer than oil filters. But having both replaced at the same service visit saves labour, since the vehicle is already in. Ask your workshop to check the fuel filter's age at every oil change even if it is not due, so it never becomes the part nobody remembers.
