A plain particle cabin filter is pleated paper that stops dust, pollen and soot. An activated carbon filter adds a layer of charcoal that also absorbs odours and some exhaust gases. The carbon type costs more and is the better choice for driving in heavy city traffic.

How does activated carbon actually remove smells?

Activated carbon is charcoal processed to have an enormous number of tiny pores, so a small amount has a very large internal surface. Gas molecules that cause smells stick to those surfaces as the air passes. The carbon does not burn or destroy anything, it simply holds the molecules until the filter is full.

A carbon filter is slightly more restrictive than a plain particle filter of the same size, but on a filter in good condition the difference is small and most drivers do not notice it. What genuinely reduces airflow is a filter that is overdue, whichever type it is. Change it on time and the type makes little difference to the fan.

For a vehicle used mostly in slow city traffic, yes. The exhaust from the vehicle in front enters the cabin through the fresh air intake, and the carbon layer is what reduces that. For a vehicle used mainly on open roads, a plain particle filter changed on time does most of the useful work.

Why does the air smell musty even after a new filter?

The smell is usually growth on the wet evaporator behind the dashboard, not the filter. A long-overdue filter lets dirt reach the evaporator, and once it is established there a new filter alone will not clear it. The evaporator needs cleaning as well, and running the fan with the air-conditioning off for the last minutes of a journey helps dry it.
