The two clearest signs are weak airflow from the vents even with the fan on full, and a musty smell when the air conditioning starts. Both appear gradually, so the reliable check is to pull the filter out and look at it rather than wait until the symptoms are obvious.

- Passengers with dust or pollen sensitivity reacting inside the vehicle.
- Visible leaves or debris when you open the filter housing.

How do I judge it by looking?

Take it out and compare it with a new one if you have it, or hold it up to daylight. A serviceable filter is pale and light passes between the pleats. One that needs changing is grey or brown across its face, and in a humid climate may be damp or have leaf material caught in the pleats. Anything damp should be replaced regardless of how it looks, because dampness is what produces the smell.

Follow your handbook interval, but treat it as a maximum in city driving. A cabin filter in constant traffic loads far faster than one on open road, and in the wet season dampness shortens its useful life further regardless of how blocked it is. Checking it at every oil change costs nothing and is the practical approach.
