On most vehicles the cabin filter sits behind the glovebox, and changing it is one of the few service jobs an owner can do without tools. The glovebox is released, the filter housing cover comes off, the old filter slides out and the new one slides in the same way round.

Where exactly is it?

Behind the glovebox on most vehicles. On some it sits under the bonnet at the base of the windscreen, in the same area where the ventilation air is drawn in, and on a few it is beneath the dashboard on the passenger side. What should I be careful about?

Four things.လေးချက် ရှိပါသည်။
- Airflow direction — most filters have an arrow printed on the frame showing which way the air flows. Fitting it backwards reduces its effectiveness.
- Clean the housing — remove leaves and debris from the empty housing before the new filter goes in, or they will be sitting against it immediately.
- Seat it fully — a filter not pushed fully home leaves a gap that unfiltered air flows through, which defeats the purpose.
- Note the code — write down or photograph the code on the old filter before discarding it, so reordering next time takes seconds.

Should I have a workshop do it instead?

Only if the filter is not behind the glovebox on your vehicle, or if the glovebox release is stiff and you would rather not force it. Where it is the standard glovebox location, an owner can do it in a few minutes and a workshop will usually charge more in labour than the filter costs. Where is the filter on most vehicles?

Behind the glovebox on the great majority of cars and light trucks — the glovebox drops down or unclips to reveal a plastic cover. Less commonly it sits under the windscreen scuttle panel outside, or under the dashboard on the passenger side. What tools does the job need?

Usually none at all, or a single screwdriver. Most glovebox filters are held by clips or two screws and the whole job takes five to ten minutes. What should I do while the filter is out?

Look into the housing and clear it. Leaves, seeds and insects collect there and block the drain, and rodents sometimes nest in it. Wipe the housing dry, check the drain is clear, and only then fit the new filter. Can a cabin filter be cleaned instead of replaced?

Vacuuming the loose debris off extends its life a little between services, and it is worth doing. It does not restore a saturated carbon layer and it does not remove mould from the media. Washing a paper cabin filter ruins it exactly as it ruins an air filter.
