A cabin filter cleans the air coming into the passenger compartment through the ventilation and air conditioning. It protects the people in the vehicle rather than the engine, and it matters most in exactly the conditions Myanmar drivers spend the most time in — slow traffic, where you are breathing the exhaust of the vehicle in front.

What does it actually filter out?

Road dust, pollen, soot from exhaust, and the fine particles thrown up by traffic. In slow-moving traffic the air entering your vents comes directly from the exhaust of the vehicle ahead, and the cabin filter is the only thing between that and the people in the car. It also keeps leaves and insect debris out of the ventilation fan and the air conditioning evaporator.

A cabin filter that has been in place too long holds trapped organic material — leaves, pollen, insects — and in a humid climate that becomes damp and starts to smell, particularly when the air conditioning first comes on. A musty smell from the vents is one of the clearest signals that the filter is overdue, and replacing it often resolves the smell entirely.
