How to Measure a Cabin Filter and What the Airflow Arrow Means

A cabin filter is a flat panel and is measured the same way as a panel air filter: length, width and height in millimetres, taken across the outside of the frame. Most cabin filters also carry an airflow arrow printed on the frame, and that arrow must point the way the air travels through the housing.

The measuring method shown in the upper left of the drawing above applies to a cabin filter exactly as it does to an engine air filter, because both are flat panels held in a housing by their frame. Measure across the outside of the frame, not across the pleated paper, and take the height at the frame edge.

What happens if I fit the filter with the arrow the wrong way?

On a plain particle filter the effect is small but real: the pleats are designed to trap dirt on one face, and reversed the filter holds less and loads up sooner. On an activated carbon filter it matters more, because the carbon layer is meant to sit downstream of the particle layer. Fit it the way the arrow says.

The filter is slightly smaller than the slot. Is that a problem?

Yes. Air takes the easiest path, so a gap at the edge means a large part of the airflow goes round the filter rather than through it. Dust and pollen then reach the cabin and the evaporator behind the dashboard. The filter should be a light push fit with no visible gap at any edge.

Some filters are sold in two pieces. Why?

On some vehicles the opening behind the glovebox is too small to pass a full-size panel through, so the filter is made in two halves that sit side by side in the housing. Both halves must be fitted, the right way round and in the right order. Fitting only one half leaves half the airflow unfiltered.
