Brake pads and brake shoes are not interchangeable. A brake pad works with a disc brake and squeezes inward; a brake shoe works with a drum brake and pushes outward. Most vehicles use brake pads at the front and brake shoes at the rear.
Are they the same part with different names?
No. They belong to two different brake designs and are not interchangeable. A pad works with a disc brake; a shoe works with a drum brake. Ordering one when your vehicle needs the other is a common mistake, so confirm which system each axle uses before you buy.
- A brake pad works with a disc or rotor; a brake shoe works with a drum.
- A brake pad is a flat rectangle; a brake shoe is a curved crescent.
- A brake pad squeezes inward; a brake shoe pushes outward.
- A brake pad is open to the air and cools quickly; a brake shoe is enclosed and holds heat.
- Brake pads sit on the front axle and often on all four wheels; brake shoes sit on the rear axle.
- A disc brake needs a separate parking brake mechanism; a drum brake usually has the parking brake built in.

How can I tell which my car has at the rear?
Look through the rear wheel. If you can see a shiny flat metal disc with a caliper clamped over its edge, that is a disc brake. If you see a plain solid metal cover shaped like a shallow bowl with no caliper, that is a drum. A torch helps on alloy wheels.
Which one stops better?
Disc brakes handle heat better and recover faster when wet, which is why they are used at the front. Drums are not unsafe — they are simply matched to the lighter work the rear axle does, and on a loaded vehicle they have real advantages. The system on your car was engineered as a set; keep it that way.
