Why are worn shoes harder to notice than worn pads?

Because a drum is a closed housing — you cannot see the lining without removing the drum, and most drum brakes have no wear sensor and no squealer tab. Rear shoes also do less work, so they degrade slowly and quietly over years rather than announcing themselves.

What symptoms should I watch for?

How often should drums be opened and checked?

Every second front pad change, or roughly once a year for a vehicle in daily use. Because the wear is invisible, a scheduled inspection is the only reliable method. Ask your workshop to check lining thickness, spring condition and the adjuster at the same visit.

Can worn shoes damage the drum?

Yes. Once the lining wears through, the steel shoe cuts grooves into the drum's inner surface, and a scored drum cannot be paired with new shoes without machining or replacement. Catching it early turns a shoe replacement into a shoe replacement — not a shoe and drum replacement.
