Which signs mean I should stop driving?

How thin is too thin?

As a general guide, replace when the friction material is down to about three millimetres. New pads typically start between ten and twelve millimetres. You can often see the pad edge through the wheel spokes with a torch — compare the inner and outer pad, since they do not always wear evenly.

Should I replace both axles at once?

Not necessarily, but always replace both wheels on the same axle together. Front and rear pads wear at different rates, so it is normal to change the front twice for every rear. Have the rear checked at the same visit so you are not back a month later.
