Why do model and year matter so much?

Because the same model name spans different compressors. Hilux is the clearest case in our list: the GGN15, KUN and LAN generation from 2004 takes 88310-0K131, while the GGN120, GUN122 and TGN136 generation from 2015 takes 88320-0K520. Ordering by "Hilux" alone has a real chance of producing the wrong unit, so the chassis number is the safe way.

What physical details must match?

Is a reconditioned compressor a reasonable buy?

It can be, if you know what was done. Ask three questions: were the shaft seal and internal seals replaced, was the unit pressure tested after assembly, and is it supplied dry or pre-oiled. A rebuild that answers all three is a fair buy. One sold as tested and refilled with no seal work usually returns within a season, and the labour is the same either way.

It is done, and it is usually a false economy. Even when the brackets can be made to line up, the displacement is matched to the evaporator and the expansion valve, so a mismatched unit either fails to cool properly or runs at high head pressure and wears out early.
