(Brake Pads · Sizes, Thickness & Wear Limits)
A new brake pad commonly has between ten and twelve millimetres of friction material on top of its steel backing plate. It is replaced when roughly three millimetres of friction material remains. That figure is measured on the friction material alone and does not include the steel plate underneath.
Diagram of brake pad thickness and the minimum wear limit. A new pad has 10-12mm of friction material on a 4-6mm steel backing plate; only the friction material is measured, never the plate, and the pad is replaced at roughly 3mm remaining. Two wear-sensor designs are shown: a metal tab that scrapes the disc and squeals, and an electrical contact that lights a dashboard lamp, both set to trigger near the minimum as a warning to replace soon rather than stop immediately. Shows estimating wear through the wheel spokes by comparing the visible friction material to the 4-5mm backing plate beside it — an estimate only, since the inner pad often wears faster and can't be seen this way. Explains why 3mm and not zero: thinner material can't absorb heat, causing fade, and 3mm leaves enough distance to reach a workshop rather than stopping immediately. Notes that pads are always replaced as a full axle set of four, that rear pads start thinner than front, and that a wear warning is not an emergency but shouldn't be ignored for long.
Why is three millimetres the limit and not zero?
Because the last few millimetres are where the pad becomes dangerous. Thin friction material cannot absorb heat, so the brakes fade under repeated use and the backing plate can reach the disc without warning. Three millimetres also leaves enough distance to reach a workshop rather than having to stop where the vehicle is.
How do I measure the remaining thickness without removing the wheel?
On many vehicles you can see the outer pad through the wheel spokes and judge it against the steel backing plate, which is usually four to five millimetres thick. If the friction material looks thinner than the plate behind it, the pad is close to its limit. This is only an estimate, and the inner pad often wears faster and cannot be seen this way.

A wear sensor is either a small metal tab that scrapes the disc and makes a high pitched squeal, or an electrical contact that lights a lamp on the dashboard when the pad wears down to it. Both are set to warn at roughly the minimum thickness. A warning means replace soon, not immediately stop, but it should not be ignored for long.
Why must pads always be replaced as an axle set?
Both wheels on the same axle must brake equally. Fitting a new pad on one side and leaving a worn one on the other gives different friction and different thickness, so the vehicle pulls to one side under braking. Always fit four pads to a front axle or four to a rear axle, never two.
What thickness does a new brake pad start at?
Brake pad
Friction material of 10 to 12 mm on a typical light vehicle front pad, on top of a backing plate of 4 to 6 mm, giving a total of 15 to 18 mm. Rear pads are often thinner at 8 to 10 mm of friction material because they do less work. Always measure the friction material alone, not the total with the plate.
What is the minimum and when should it actually be changed?
The legal and engineering minimum is usually 3 mm of friction material, and most wear indicators trigger at 2 to 3 mm. In practice change at 3 to 4 mm rather than waiting: below 3 mm the pad heats much faster because there is less material to absorb the energy, brake fade increases, and the margin before metal-to-metal contact is a few hundred kilometres.
How do I measure a pad without removing the wheel?
Look through the spokes at the outer pad against the disc, with a torch. It gives a usable estimate but not a reliable one, because the inner pad is hidden and frequently wears faster — on a caliper with a sticking slide pin the inner pad can be down to 2 mm while the outer looks like 6 mm. Any pad that looks close to the limit through the wheel should be measured properly with the wheel off.
