(Brake Pads · Sizes, Thickness & Wear Limits)
A brake pad set fits or does not fit on three measurements taken from the friction face: the length, the height and the total thickness including the steel backing plate. All three have to match the caliper, because a pad that is too long will not enter the carrier and a pad that is too thick will not allow the caliper to close over a new disc.
The upper left of the drawing above shows where each measurement is taken. L is the longest dimension of the friction face, H is the shorter one, and T is measured from the back of the steel plate to the outer surface of the friction material. The edge view shows the two layers clearly: the grey steel backing plate and the friction material bonded to it.
Brake pads are sized by three measurements taken from the friction face: L (longest dimension), H (shorter dimension), and T (total thickness from the back of the steel plate to the friction-material surface). A metal wear-indicator tab squeals against the disc once the pad wears down. Inner and outer pads on many calipers have different backing-plate shapes — check position, not just the box label. Too long and it will not enter the carrier; too thick and the caliper cannot close over a new disc.
Do all four pads in a set have the same measurements?
Not always. On many calipers the inner and outer pads differ, usually in the shape of the backing plate or in which pad carries the wear sensor and the anti-rattle clips. Check each pad against its position before fitting, and keep the set in the order it came out of the box. Forcing the wrong pad into a position damages the carrier.
How much tolerance is there on each measurement?
Almost none on length and height. The pad slides in a machined carrier and a difference of even one millimetre either binds the pad or lets it rattle. Thickness has a little more room, because the caliper piston can be wound back, but a pad noticeably thicker than the original may not fit over a disc that is still near its new thickness.
Is there a standard reference number for brake pad shapes?
Brake pad
Yes. European catalogues use a WVA number and North American ones use an FMSI number, and both identify the exact shape of the pad rather than the vehicle. If you have either number from the old pad or its box, it is the fastest and safest way to find a match, because it removes any guesswork about which engine or trim the vehicle has.
What are typical brake shoe sizes?
Shoes are quoted by drum diameter and lining width. Light commercials commonly run 254 mm (10 inch) or 295 mm drums with linings 45 to 60 mm wide; medium trucks move to 320, 350 and 410 mm drums with 100 to 180 mm linings. Both numbers are needed — the same drum diameter is often offered with two lining widths.
What is the lining wear limit?
Measured from the top of the lining to the shoe platform or to the rivet head. On a riveted shoe the limit is typically 1.0 to 1.5 mm of lining above the rivet head, because once a rivet touches the drum it scores it in a single stop. On a bonded shoe the limit is usually 1.5 to 2.0 mm of remaining lining.

It is cast or stamped on the outside of the drum, usually as "MAX" followed by a diameter — for example MAX 255.5 on a 254 mm drum, allowing 1.5 mm of machining. Measure the inside diameter at several points; a drum beyond the limit, or worn oval by more than about 0.15 mm, is replaced rather than skimmed.
Why do shoes wear unevenly front to back?
Because in a leading-trailing drum brake the two shoes do different amounts of work. The leading shoe is pulled harder into the drum by the rotation and does most of the braking, so it wears noticeably faster than the trailing one. Uneven wear front to back on a single shoe, however, points at a seized adjuster, a weak return spring or an oval drum.
Do drum brakes need adjusting?
Self-adjusting mechanisms handle it on most vehicles, but they seize with rust and then stop adjusting silently. The symptom is a pedal that travels further than it used to before the brakes bite. Check the adjuster moves freely every time the drums are off, and free or replace it — a seized adjuster is one of the most common reasons a drum brake underperforms.
