A brake shoe set is sized by the inner diameter of the drum it runs in and by the width of the lining. A common way to write it is 254 by 57 millimetres, meaning a 254 millimetre drum and a 57 millimetre wide lining. Both figures must match, because a narrow lining in a wide drum wears a step into the drum surface.

The right of the drawing above shows two shoes seated inside a drum. The pink band on the outside of each shoe is the friction lining, and the grey part behind it is the steel shoe itself. The drum inner diameter is measured across the braking surface, not across the outside of the drum casting.

How do I measure the drum if I do not know the size?

With the drum off, measure straight across the inside of the braking surface with a vernier caliper or an internal gauge, through the centre. Take the measurement in two directions at right angles, because a worn drum is often oval. Use the larger reading and compare it to the maximum diameter cast into the drum.

When must brake shoes be replaced?

A new lining is commonly four to six millimetres thick. A riveted lining must be replaced before it wears down to the rivet heads, because exposed rivets cut grooves into the drum. A bonded lining has no rivets and is replaced when roughly one and a half to two millimetres remain. Confirm the figure for the vehicle in its manual.

Should the drum be replaced at the same time as the shoes?

Only if the drum is at or beyond its maximum diameter, or if it is scored, cracked or heat damaged. A drum within limits and with a smooth surface can be reused. New shoes fitted into a scored or oval drum touch only on the high spots, which gives weak braking and a pulsing pedal until they wear to match.
