What does the inner braid do?

That reduces turbulence and noise and stops carbon packing into the folds, which is what makes an unlined flexi stiffen over time and then crack. Almost always because something else is letting the engine or the exhaust move too far. Check the engine mountings first — a collapsed mount lets the engine rock much further than the flexi was designed to absorb. Then check the exhaust hangers and the pipe supports along the system; a broken hanger puts the whole weight of the rear section on the flexi.

A weld across a flexible joint removes the flexibility, which is the one thing the part exists to provide. The weld then cracks, or the rigid section transfers the movement to the next weakest point — usually the manifold studs or the catalytic converter flange, both of which cost far more than a flexi. Is a blowing exhaust dangerous or just noisy?

It can be genuinely dangerous. A leak ahead of or under the cabin can let exhaust gas reach the occupants, and carbon monoxide has no smell. Can I fit a flexi pipe myself?

It is a welding job, not a bolt-on, on most vehicles — the flexi is welded into the pipe rather than clamped. Some listings come with a flange, which makes it a bolted repair where the original was flanged too. Either way the exhaust has to be supported while the old section is cut out, or the weight tears the next joint along.
