Three things, and the first matters most. Bring the part itself, because every number needed to identify it is printed or stamped on the part. Where do I find the engine code?

It is stamped on a machined flat pad on the engine block, most often on the side facing the gearbox or near the front below the cylinder head joint. On Japanese diesels it is a letter-and-number combination such as 4D56, 2KD-FTV, TD27 or 6D16. What you noticed and when. The distance driven since the part was fitted, whether the symptom appears cold or hot, at idle or at speed, and whether anything else was replaced at the same time. Yes, and it is worth asking before the part goes on rather than after. Staff can tell you the torque figures that apply, whether a gasket or seal in the kit must be replaced rather than reused, which way round a part fits, and the common mistakes for that particular part. Can staff identify a part from a photograph?

Often yes, but only if the numbers are legible. Photograph the stamped or printed face square-on, not at an angle, in good light, and wipe the oil off first. Put a tape measure or a coin beside the part so scale is visible, and take a second shot of the whole part so its shape and the position of any bracket or port can be seen. What if the old part cannot be removed from the vehicle?

Bring the vehicle if you can, because staff can then read the numbers in place.
